Final score: Marlins 7, Mets 3—Colon struggles in emotional series opener

Jose Fernandez was remembered before the game, and the Marlins went on to beat the Mets.

MLB: New York Mets at Miami Marlins Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

In a game that began with the commemoration of Jose Fernandez, who was supposed to start tonight but tragically died on Sunday, the Marlins beat the Mets 7-3. Once the emotional pre-game ceremonies came to a close and the teams attempted to return to the normalcy of baseball by playing a game, Dee Gordon hit a storybook home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning.

From there, Bartolo Colon served up plenty of lasers in a rare very bad 2016 start. He gave up seven runs on eight hits in just two-and-one-third innings. The Mets’ bullpen shut out Miami the rest of the way, but the Mets were only able to score three runs despite having several opportunities to score more.

The silver lining of the game was that it felt something like a normal baseball game by the time it ended. Given the circumstances, that was a small step in the right direction for the sport.

Full recap to follow.
