The Mets took the rubber game from the Marlins tonight with a 5-2 victory. The beleaguered Jay Bruce picked the right time to get hot. He smashed his second two-run home run in as many nights to give the Mets a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Also promising was a four-hit night by Curtis Granderson.
The Mets were behind the eight ball early when starter Seth Lugo had a troublesome first inning. Seven Marlins came to the plate and two scored on one swing by Martin Prado. This scenario was a theme all night for Lugo who seemed to be in trouble every inning. He was lifted with one out in the sixth, but he limited the damage to just those two runs.
The Mets’ offense bounced back quickly from the deficit when James Loney hit a two-run shot to tie up the game in the second. Later, Seth Lugo helped his own cause with a double, and came home with the go-ahead run when Jose Reyes followed with his own double. Bruce’s home run an inning later would cap the scoring.
The bullpen combination of Hansel Robles, Fernando Salas, and Addison Reed kept the Marlins off the board and set up a save opportunity for Jeurys Familia. Familia picked up save number 50 and the Mets walked away with the win after an emotional three days.
Full recap to follow.
