With the Mets enjoying their last off day of the regular season, there’s plenty going on tonight that could affect their place in the National League Wild Card standings. The Cardinals host the Reds for the final game of a four-game series that’s seen the Reds take two of the first three. The Giants host the Rockies for the last of a three-game series, the first two game of which those teams split.
The Mets lead the Cardinals by 2.5 games and have a magic number of 2 to guarantee they finish ahead of them—and therefore clinch a spot in the Wild Card game. And the Mets lead the Giants by 1.5 games, and their magic number to finish ahead of them is 3. But if the Mets and Giants were to finish tied for the first Wild Card spot, the Mets hold the tiebreaker advantage. It’s still possible for the outcome to get a little wacky, but the Mets would be an excellent position this weekend if they get any help tonight.
