BRADENTON 4, ST. LUCIE 1 (Box)

Brandenton ended the Mets’ season with a 4-1 victory, and the Marauders advanced to their first FSL championship in franchise history. St. Lucie wound up an astounding 0-10 at McKechnie Field in 2016.

P.J. Conlon got the start for St. Lucie as the team tried to keep its playoff hopes alive. He was brilliant in 2016, posting a 1.65 ERA across two minor league affiliates. However, he faltered in his most important start of the year. He worked around a two-out walk in the first inning but ran into trouble in the second. He gave up a solo home run to give Bradenton a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning with a runner on third and two outs, it looked like Conlon was going to get out of further trouble. He induced a pop-up in the middle of the infield and while four Mets called for it, the ball found grass to make it 2-0. Conlon gave up back-to-back doubles in the third inning to give the Marauders a 3-0 advantage. Conlon went four innings, tossing 85 pitches and yielding three runs on eight hits. The lefty hadn’t given up more than two runs in an outing since June.

It’s not like the Mets didn’t have their opportunities to win this game, though. St. Lucie went an abysmal 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position, including 0-for-9 through five innings. Their best chance came on their final at-bat of the night. Kevin Taylor, Tomas Nido and John Mora opened the ninth with back-to-back-to-back singles. With the tying run at the plate, Luis Guillorme struck out. Jhoan Urena then plated the Mets’ lone run of the game on a fielder’s choice. The Mets’ final hopes rested in the hands of Champ Stuart, who replaced the injured Kevin Kaczmarski on the roster. Stuart struck out to end the game and the season.
