The Mets have signed former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow to a minor league contract. After deciding to try his hand at professional baseball, Tebow recently held a workout for Major League Baseball teams. The Mets and most other teams sent a scout to the workout.
Since then, it sounded like Tebow might sign with the Braves, and their general manager said that there’s “no risk” in signing him. It’s a fair point, as a minor league contract doesn’t cost a team anything in the grand scheme of things.
Tebow hadn’t played baseball since high school before making the decision to try it out professionally. The 29-year-old showed some power and speed in his workout, though overall reviews of his performance were mixed. After the workout, ESPN did a silly thing and compared Tebow’s contact rate in the workout to contact rates of actual major league players, as Ted Berg pointed out. There’ll be plenty of silly things like that along the way, even if it seems like Tebow is an extreme long shot to make it to the big leagues.
