Although the Mets have been quiet this offseason since the team re-signed Yoenis Cespedes, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports that Jay Bruce is likely to be traded soon. For the past few months, there have been a number of trade talks surrounding Bruce and Curtis Granderson, though the Mets have always preferred a deal that ships Bruce out of New York.
The left-handed-hitting right fielder finished last season with a .250/.309/.506 line and 33 home runs, but he hit just .219/.294/.391 with 8 home runs in 187 plate appearances for the Mets after the team acquired him. After the season ended, the Mets picked up Bruce’s $13 million option for the 2017 season, a move that now looks like it was the backup plan in case Yoenis Cespedes did not return.
DiComo points out that the issue with a Bruce trade hasn’t necessarily been finding a team to trade with, but the Mets’ desire to acquire something valuable in return.
