The Phillies defeated the Mets 11-0 this afternoon at Citizen’s Bank Park, putting the Mets’ season to bed and, with it, the managerial career of Terry Collins.
The afternoon began with a short, two-inning start from the rehabbing Noah Syndergaard, who looked quite good, walking one and giving up no hits while striking out two and hitting 101 miles per hour with his fastball. He would be relieved by Chris Flexen who, along with some defensive miscues by Dominic Smith, gave up six runs in the fourth inning, putting the game out of reach early. A Maikel Franco home run got Philadelphia on the board, and while they wouldn’t need any more offense, kept dishing it out.
Rafael Montero would give up another five runs in the eighth inning, including a three-run, inside the park homer to Nick Williams. Phillies pitching, led by starter Nick Pivetta, combined for a two-hit shutout, despite walking 11 Mets.
