The first situation the Mets will need to resolve will be the of the disabled list for the year. At present there are 43 players on the 40 man roster and only Jose Reyes is set to be a free agent. Two more names will need to be removed when Wright, Wheeler and Matz are activated from the 60 day DL. Seeing as Tommy Milone & Nori Aoki are non-tender candidates they might get released earlier to solve this problem. Travis Taijeron and Wuilmer Becerra could also be DFA'd to make room.

Hansel Robles makes the super two cutoff by just 6 days. By sending him to AAA for a month plus the Mets gained a year of arbitration control in 2021. Because they each spent less than 20 days total on optional assignment Sewald, Bradford, Smoker & McGowan all had their 2017 options voided and have the same amount of option years remaining as they did at the beginning of the season.

The 2018 payroll situation is that the Mets owe Wright, Cespeds & Lagares a total of $55.5 million in guaranteed contacts with $15.5 million in team options for Cabrera and Blevins. Add in MLB trade rumors arbitration estimates for the Mets which total $52.1 million plus approx $6 million to round out the roster with Pre-Arb players and the total is nearly $130 million before any additions. A potentially more realistic number is closer to $121 mil if you assume Aoki and Milone will not be offered arbitration, and could get even lower if Ramos and Cabrera are not retained. Of course the last two would open up even more holes than the four additions that Sandy Alderson has already indicated need to be made. Any way you look at it there is limited funds to spread around to address all of the shortcomings of the current roster.

Edited Oct 27: 6 player were removed from the 40 man roster with limited impact on the payroll.
