Last week, we asked you to predict who will be the Mets’ best hitter and pitcher in 2017. Today, we’re asking AA readers to make your third preseason prediction: Who do you think will be the team’s best defensive player? After reading your predictions, we’ll check back on a quarterly basis during the season to see how they hold up!
To measure defense, we’ll be using an average of DRS and UZR, probably the two best publicly available defensive metrics. Unfortunately, UZR does not measure pitcher or catcher defense, so we’re focusing on the seven other positions on the field. Juan Lagares led the Mets with 8 DRS last year, while Neil Walker set the pace with 9.3 UZR. Taking an average of the two, the Mets’ top three defenders were Lagares, Walker, and Ty Kelly, who came in at 6.7, 4.7, and 3.5, respectively.
Let us know who you think will be the Mets’ best defender in 2017, and be sure to make your next preseason prediction by voting in tomorrow’s poll!
