For the last week, we’ve been asking you to make preseason predictions about various Mets-related topics. Those topics include who will be the team’s best hitter, pitcher, defender, rookie, and position player. Today, we’re asking who you think will be the team’s best overall player in 2017.
We’ll identify the team’s best player using an average of fWAR and bWAR. Remember, this poll includes both position players and pitchers, meaning we’re looking for the player who provides the most overall value to the Mets, as measured by WAR.
Last year, Noah Syndergaard led all Mets players in both fWAR and bWAR. His WAR totals of 6.5 and 5.3, respectively, resulted in an average of 5.9. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Mets’ second- and third-most valuable players in 2016 were also pitchers: Jacob deGrom finished with 3.5 average WAR, while Bartolo Colon posted an average WAR of 3.2. Among position players, Yoenis Cespedes and Neil Walker had the highest average WAR totals (3.1).
Who do you think will be the Mets’ best overall player in 2017? Let us know in the poll, and check back tomorrow to make your final preseason prediction!
