The Mets wasted a great start by Jacob deGrom, who pitched seven brilliant innings, struck out a career-high with 13, and allowed just four hits. Two of those hits were solo home runs, back-to-back shots by Justin Bour and Marcell Ozuna in the second inning, but they were the only blemishes in what might’ve been deGrom’s best outing since 2015.
The Mets were trailing 2-1 most of the game, but tied it at two in the seventh inning on a Curtis Granderson RBI triple. Michael Conforto then brought Granderson home with a deep sac fly to take a 3-2 lead, and Asdrubal Cabrera added a home run in the eighth to make it 4-2.
But an overworked Fernando Salas came on in relief on deGrom and saw the game blow up on him, allowing a two-run homer to Christian Yelich to tie the game at four, followed by a solo shot by Giancarlo Stanton to give the Marlins the 5-4 lead. Miami would hold on in the ninth for the win.
Full recap to follow.
