Zack Wheeler had a promising third start, but the Mets lost another extra innings heartbreaker to the Phillies tonight.
The deciding factor was an error by Jose Reyes in the top of the eighth inning. The score was sitting at 2-1 in favor of the Mets, with Wheeler in line for the win. Coming into foul territory on a pop-up, Reyes dropped a ball right in his mitt that bounced into play. The next batter, Andres Blanco, hit an RBI ground-rule double to tie the game.
Rafael Montero did not help the Mets’ cause in the tenth inning. He was charged with three earned runs while only recording one out, and the Phillies scored four runs in total to take a 6-2 lead.
