The Mets defeated the Nationals 5-3 with Michael Conforto leading the charge.
Zack Wheeler stumbled a bit out of the gate when he gave up a run in the first inning, and trouble seemed to follow him in every inning after that. He bent but never fell apart and got several big outs during the course of the game, including another Bryce Harper double play.
Some defensive issues in the fifth cost Wheeler an unearned run and the chance to win the game since he was unable to complete the inning.
Wheeler had been in a position to perhaps collect a win when the Mets handed him the lead in the top of the inning. Michael Conforto had the biggest blow in the inning when he took Stephen Strasburg deep for a two-run home run. He added another blast off of a lefty in the eighth to give the Mets a cushion.
When Addison Reed allowed the Nationals to inch closer, the suddenly hot Jose Reyes got the run right back with a home run. Jeurys Familia pitched a clean ninth and the Mets walked away with the win.
