The Mets lost to the Braves tonight, 3-1, in a frustrating extra-inning contest at Citi Field. Much as was the case with Opening Day, tonight’s game started off as a pitcher’s duel, though tonight’s contest featured two former teammates facing off against each other.
Jacob deGrom pitched six strong innings for the Mets, striking out six, giving up two hits, walking one, and surrendering no runs. And while no one should be surprised, old friend Bartolo Colon pitched at least as well as deGrom through six innings, his sole mistake coming in the form of a Jay Bruce solo home run; otherwise, Colon mostly made Mets hitters look silly.
Indeed, Mets hitters were quite helpless throughout this game. The Braves were barely better, but their persistent threats of taking the lead in extra innings finally paid off in the top of the 12th inning when Matt Kemp doubled in two runs to give the Braves a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Games like these make you almost forget who started them, and even more eager to forget them altogether once they’re over. Tomorrow is another day.
