Final score: Marlins 7, Mets 2—Wheeler returns but struggles

The Mets lost their series opener against the Marlins.

MLB: Miami Marlins at New York Mets Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets lost their series opener against the Marlins tonight 7-2. Zack Wheeler looked excellent in the top of the first and struggled mightily after that. It was his first major league start since late in the 2014 season, but he gave up five runs and threw 80 pitches in four innings of work.

Once Wheeler was done, Josh Smoker gave up two runs in just one-third of an inning. Rafael Montero and Josh Edgin combined to prevent the Marlins from scoring the rest of the way, but the Mets scored just twice in the game, on an RBI single from Curtis Granderson in the bottom of the first and a solo home run from Yoenis Cespedes in the eighth.
