Jacob deGrom shut down the Angels for seven innings tonight as the Mets beat Los Angeles 3-0. The Mets had lost seven in a row and hadn’t picked up a win since May 9 against the Giants.
Curtis Granderson got the Mets on the board in the first inning with a ground-rule double that drove in Michael Conforto. In the sixth, Rene Rivera drove in Neil Walker—who shrewdly advanced from first to second on a fly out—for the Mets’ second run. And in the seventh, Conforto struck again with a solo home run to left field.
deGrom was excellent, striking out nine and allowing four hits and three walks. He ran into trouble in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out on a double, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. But he got out of it on a strikeout, a soft liner to shortstop—that Jose Reyes made a nice play on after the ball popped out of his glove—and a fly out.
The bullpen recorded two scoreless innings—if you can believe it!—and the Mets walked away victorious.
Full recap to follow.
