The Mets defeated the Braves 16-5 at Sun Trust Park this evening in Cobb County. Jacob deGrom started for the Mets, and wasn’t his best, going only five innings, giving up five runs, eight hits, five walks, and struck out five. Luckily, Bartolo Colon was not at his best either, and the Mets were able to jump out on top early, and never really looked back, despite the Braves putting up five runs against deGrom.
Today was an oddity for the Mets, as they scored a bunch of runs without a single home run. Jose Reyes and Rene Rivera led the offensive charge - a sentence that would have seemed impossible even a few hours ago -by driving in a total of eight runs between the two of them. Every starting player - including deGrom - notched at least a hit, eventually racking up 20 hits.
The scoring came in spurts, with the eighth inning being the most prolific, as seven Mets scored and really put the game to bed. Josh Edgin, a perturbed Addison Reed, Fernando Salas, and Josh Smoker pitched in relief, and gave up no runs in the process.
Full recap to follow.
