Jacob deGrom was shelled for four innings and the offense was nonexistent as the Mets dropped the third game of their four-game set with the Brewers, 7-1. deGrom pitched only four innings, throwing 105 pitches, walking five, and striking out six, getting hung out to dry because the Mets had even less bullpen depth than usual after their extra-inning victory on Tuesday. Michael Conforto drove in the only Mets run with a two-out double in the ninth inning, scoring Juan Lagares.
There was definitely some hard luck on offense for the Mets, as Wilmer Flores hit a pair of rockets right at an infielder, and Lucas Duda and Neil Walker had hard-hit outs as well. Still, the team managed only five hits and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, stranding nine runners on base. On the pitching side, the Mets’ walk rate continued to balloon, as they walked another eight batters (one intentionally). Unsurprisingly, Neil Ramirez had three of those in his two innings of work.
Zack Wheeler starts opposite Chase Anderson in Thursday’s matinee to close out the series, as the Mets look to continue the climb back to .500.
Full recap to follow.
