Shortly after picking left-handed pitcher David Peterson with their first-round pick in the 2017 amateur draft, the New York Mets took a high school third baseman named Mark Vientos with their second-round pick, the 59th overall in the draft.
Here’s a blurb from Minor League Ball’s profile of Vientos heading into the draft:
It seems likely that Vientos’ youth and bat will be too much for teams to pass up at the top of the draft and that he won’t get to college. The exact shape his abilities will take down the line is uncertain, but the ceiling is certainly high enough to be worth a gamble.
We’ll have our own profile of Vientos shortly, but in his initial reaction to the pick, Amazin’ Avenue alum Alex Nelson tweeted:
“While Peterson was safe, Vientos carries some risk. Lanky frame with very good batspeed. Long limbs can create leverage once he bulks up.”
