Zack Wheeler had the worst start of his major league career, and the Cubs obliterated the Mets by a 14-3 score in the second game of the three-game series between the clubs at Citi Field. That ended a modest—but not insignificant—four-game winning streak for the Mets and brought Wheeler up to a 4.48 ERA on the season.
Wheeler gave up eight runs in one-and-two-thirds innings, the first of which was a solo home run off the bat of Anthony Rizzo to begin the game. But the wheels fell off when Ian Happ hit a grand slam in the second to put the Cubs up 6-1.
Josh Smoker threw four innings in relief, and although he gave up three runs in that time, he greatly lessened the load on the rest of the bullpen. If the Mets bounce back from this one, his outing shouldn’t be forgotten.
Full recap to follow.
