Final Score: Nationals 7, Mets 4—Quadruple double trouble

Early hole, quelled rallies doom Mets to third straight defeat.

MLB: Washington Nationals at New York Mets Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

The Nationals jumped out to a 1-0 lead one batter into the game on a Trea Turner leadoff home run, and proceeded to put up single runs in each of the first four innings en route to an early 4-0 lead that ultimately held up. The Nats’ beleaguered bullpen allowed things to get interesting at times, but managed to record the final 11 outs in the Nats’ 7-4 victory.

The Mets had their opportunities, but saw rallies killed by double plays in each of the first, fourth, sixth, and ninth innings.

Adam Lind hit a two-run home run—the Nats’ third home run of the game—in the top of the eighth, and the Nats added another off Addison Reed in the ninth, giving Washington a helpful cushion, as the Mets never got closer than two.

The loss left the Mets 11.5 games behind the Nationals in the National League East, and in danger of being swept in this crucial four-game series.
