Tasked with saving the Mets from a series sweep against the division leading Washington Nationals, Jacob deGrom pitched a gem, striking out six over eight innings while only allowing one run. deGrom helped his own cause in the third, hitting his first career home run. deGrom and Travis d’Arnaud also allowed four stolen bases to Nationals shortstop Trea Turner. Addison Reed allowed a double to to Daniel Murphy, but coaxed two line-outs from Ryan Zimmerman and Anthony Rendon, finally striking out Matt Wieters to get both the save and the win.
The Mets would out hit the Nationals 11-3, backed by strong performances from Michael Conforto (2-for-3, two RBI, and a walk), Lucas Duda (2-for-3), and T.J. “All I Do Is Hit” Rivera, who went 4-for-4.
deGrom improves to 6-3 on the season, and his ERA dropped to 3.94.
