Final Score: Mets 8, Giants 2—Sweep relief

Mets secure an elusive series sweep against the struggling Giants.

MLB: New York Mets at San Francisco Giants Andrew Villa-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets traveled up the coast and down in weight class this weekend, and found this stop infinitely more enjoyable. The Mets rode the glove, arm, and bat of catcher Rene Rivera early, and poured it on late en route to an 8-2 victory, completing a three-game sweep—their first series sweep since April 10th-12th against the Phillies.

The Mets jumped on Giants starter Matt Moore early, scoring a run in the first without benefit of a base hit, as Curtis Granderson (on base five times, including one deposited in San Francisco Bay) walked, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored via two productive outs. They then added two more in the second inning, on the first of two Rene Rivera home runs on the day.

The Giants had a rally going against Rafael Montero in the third, cutting the score to 3-1 on a Buster Posey sacrifice fly. With runners on first and third and Brandon Belt at the plate with two outs, Rivera gunned down Hunter Pence inexplicably trying to steal second base to end the rally.

Montero was effective over 5.2 innings, striking out seven while generating a number of swinging strikes, particularly with his change-up. Giants starter Matt Moore was wild and ineffective over his 4.1 innings, the last of his 86 pitches potentially being the costliest to the Mets, as he hit Michael Conforto in the wrist. Conforto left the game a couple of innings later with what x-rays revealed to be a bruise.
