Mets vs Marlins Recap: That’s more like it

Matz, Cabrera, Granderson, and seemingly everyone else steamrolled the Marlins.

The Mets evened their series with the Marlins this evening in Miami by the score of 8-0. The Marlins sent Jeff Locke to the mound, and the game did not exactly start off well for the Fish. After walking Curtis Granderson to start the game, Locke gave up a two-run home run to Asdrubal Cabrera. Though they did not know it at the time, this would have been enough offense for the night.

8-0 win

A few outs later, a Jay Bruce single and a Travis d’Arnaud walk set up a Jose Reyes single, which plated Bruce. This gave Steven Matz a 3-0 lead before he entered the game.

Matz did not need much more, as he was quite effective. In 110 pitches over seven innings, Matz struck out four, walked one, and gave up five hits. While he wasn’t, perhaps, at his most dominant, he controlled the game, and didn’t allow the Marlins to do much at all. The Marlins did not collect an extra base hit, and only got a runner on second base twice over the course of the game.

Locke started the sixth inning, and gave up a Travis d’Arnaud double and a Reyes single, before T.J. Rivera grounded out, scoring d’Arnaud. Locke was relieved by Dustin McGowan, who was promptly greeted by a Curtis Granderson two-run home run.

In the eighth inning, Junichi Tazawa walked Wilmer Flores, gave up a double to Reyes, and then both scored on a Brandon Nimmo RBI single later that inning. Josh Edgin and Chase Bradford finished out the game for the Mets with minimal drama.

Seth Lugo and Jose Urena are set to finish off the series tonight night at 7:10pm in Miami.
