2017 Mets Draft: Reviewing the 2016 draft

Who did the Mets select in the 2016 draft, and how did they do?

With their first-round pick, the Mets selected Justin Dunn, a reliever-turned-starter from Boston College. Dunn made his 2016 debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and posted a 1.50 ERA in 30.0 innings, walking 10 and striking out 35.

With their supplemental first-round pick, the Mets selected Anthony Kay, a left-hander out of the University of Connecticut. Kay did not pitch during the 2016 season, and later underwent Tommy John surgery.

Rounds 2-10

With their second-round pick, the Mets selected Peter Alonso, a power-hitting first baseman from the University of Florida. Alonso made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and hit .321/.382/.587 in 30 games before having his season end prematurely due to a broken pinky finger.

With their third-round pick, the Mets selected Blake Tiberi, a third baseman from the University of Louisville. Tiberi made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and hit .235/.316/.316 in 56 games.

With their fourth-round pick, the Mets selected Michael Paez, a shortstop from Coastal Carolina University. Paez made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones after helping his college win the College World Series, and hit .190/.270/.285 in 46 games.

With their fifth-round pick, the Mets selected Colby Woodmansee, a shortstop from ASU. Woodmansee made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and hit .257/.305/.325 in 64 games, the most any player played with the team in 2016.

With their sixth-round pick, the Mets selected Chris Viall, a right-handed pitcher from Stanford. The 6’9” Viall made his professional debut with the Kingsport Mets and posted a 6.75 ERA in 20 innings, walking 17 and striking out 27.

With their seventh-round pick, the Mets selected Austin McGeorge, a right-handed pitcher from Cal State Long Beach. The slider specialist made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and posted a 2.84 ERA in 19.0 innings, walking six and striking out 18.

With their eighth-round pick, the Mets selected Placido Torres, a left-handed pitcher from Tusculum College. The diminutive southpaw made his professional debut with the Kingsport Mets and posted a 3.38 ERA in 18.2 innings, walking six and striking out 26.

With their ninth-round pick, the Mets selected Colin Holderman, a right-handed pitcher from Heartland Community College. Holderman made his professional debut with the Kingsport Mets and posted a 3.86 ERA in 18.2 innings, walking 11 and striking out 13.

With their 10th-round pick, the Mets selected Gene Cone, an outfielder from the University of South Carolina. The former Gamecock made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones, and hit .227/.312/.275 in 60 games.

Rounds 11-20

With their 11th-round pick, the Mets selected Cameron Planck, a right-handed pitcher from Rowan County High School in Morehead, Kentucky. Planck did not pitch professionally in 2016.

With their 12th-round pick, the Mets selected Matt Cleveland, a right-handed pitcher from Windsor High School in Windsor, Connecticut. Cleveland made his professional debut with the GCL Mets and posted a 12.27 ERA in 7.1 innings, walking 6 and striking out 2.

With their 13th-round pick, the Mets selected Dan Rizzie, a catcher from Xavier University. The defensive-minded backstop made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and hit .162/.286/.210 in 33 games.

With their 14th-round pick, the Mets selected Christian James, a right-handed pitcher from East Lake High School in Tarpon, Florida. James made his professional debut with the GCL Mets and posted a 0.52 ERA in 17.1 innings, walking 5 and striking out 15.

With their 15th-round pick, the Mets selected Jacob Zanon, a center fielder from Lewis-Clark State College. Zanon made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and hit .197/.284/.287 in 44 games.

With their 16th-round pick, the Mets selected Trent Johnson, a right-handed pitcher from Santa Fe Community College. The winningest pitcher in the history of the Santa Fe CC baseball program made his professional debut with the Kingsport Mets and posted a 6.61 ERA in 16.1 innings, walking four and striking out 14.

With their 17th-round pick, the Mets selected Jay Jabs, a corner infielder from Franklin Pierce University. Jabs, whose real name is Jimmison, made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and hit .177/.275/.223 in 52 games.

With their 18th-round pick, the Mets selected Adam Atkins, a right-handed pitcher from Louisiana Tech University. The side-armer made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and posted a 3.71 ERA in 17.0 innings, walking nine and striking out 22.

With their 19th-round pick, the Mets selected Gary Cornish, a right-handed pitcher from the University of San Diego. Cornish, who was suspended over the offseason for testing positive for amphetamines, made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and posted a 2.16 ERA in 25.0 innings, walking three and striking out 44.

Rounds 21-30

With their 21st-round pick, the Mets selected Max Kuhns, a right-handed pitcher from Santa Clara University. Kuhns, who comes from a family of athletes, made his professional debut with the Kingsport Mets and posted a 6.28 ERA in 14.1 innings, walking eight and striking out 15.

With their 22nd-round pick, the Mets selected Ian Strom, a center fielder from the University of Massachusetts. The defensive-minded outfielder made his professional debut with the Kingsport Mets and hit .228/.319/.317 in 37 games.

With their 23rd-round pick, the Mets selected Nick Sergakis, a second baseman from Ohio State University. The gritty Sergakis made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and hit .252/.353/.364 in 38 games.

With their 24th-round pick, the Mets selected Dariel Rivera, a right-handed pitcher from Dr. Juan J. Osuna High School in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Rivera made his professional debut with the GCL Mets and posted a 2.79 ERA in 9.2 innings, walking 5 and striking out 3.

With their 30th-round pick, the Mets selected Eric Villanueva, a right-handed pitcher from Josefina Barcelo High School in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Villanueva made his professional debut with the GCL Mets and posted a 6.96 ERA in 10.1 innings, walking 13 and striking out 5.

Rounds 31-40

With their 31st-round pick, the Mets selected Jeremy Wolf, an outfielder from Trinity University. Wolf, who arguably was the best hitter in all of Division III baseball in 2016, made his professional debut with the Kingsport Mets and hit .290/.359/.448 in 50 games.

With their 36th-round pick, the Mets selected Garrison Bryant, a right-handed pitcher from Clearwater High School in Clearwater, Florida. Bryant, who graduated from the same high school as former Mets All-Star Howard Johnson, made his professional debut with the GCL Mets and posted a 9.72 ERA in 8.1 innings, walking two and striking out five.
