Mets Prospect Report Card: May

With the book on May closed, let's check in on the Mets’ top prospects and see how they’re doing.

Amed Rosario
Chris McShane

With two months in the books, it’s time to check on Amazin’ Avenue’s Top 25 Mets Prospects list and see how the players are performing.

For editing purposes, because Gabriel Ynoa was traded, he will not be included. Instead, we will include T.J. Rivera, who was the aggregate 26th prospect when the Top 25 Mets Prospect list was compiled for 2017.

Amed Rosario, SS

2017 Rank: 1

Level: Triple-A (Las Vegas)

May: 28 G, 121 AB, .322/.362/.529, 4 HR, 26 RBI, 7 BB, 21 K, 4/6 SB

Season: 51 G, 210 AB, .357/.395/.519, 4 HR, 38 RBI, 13 BB, 34 K, 11/15 SB

Stock: UP

Rosario hit for a little less average, and his strikeout rate went up a little, but there’s still no doubt he’s a special, special player.

Robert Gsellman, RHP

2017 Rank: 2

Level: MLB (New York)

May: 3-1, 5.40 ERA, 7 G/5 GS, 30.0 IP, 34 H, 4 HR, 8 BB, 16 K, .286 AVG

Season: 3-3, 5.75 ERA, 12 G/9 GS, 51.2 IP, 62 H, 6 HR, 17 BB, 38 K, .290 AVG

Stock: HOLDING

Gsellman’s results have not been there, but he’s looked better in his last few starts, and the front office is still very confident in him.

Thomas Szapucki, LHP

2017 Rank: 3

Level: N/A

May: N/A

Season: N/A

Stock: HOLDING

Szapucki has yet to make his 2017 debut, beginning the season on the disabled list recovering from a shoulder impingement.

Desmond Lindsay, CF

2017 Rank: 4

Level: Low-A (Columbia)

May: 21 G, 60 AB, .100/.217/.167, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 9 BB, 22 K, 0/1 SB

Season: 42 G, 127 AB, .150/.299/.260, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 26 BB, 48 K, 4/5 SB

Stock: DOWN

It was easy to overlook Lindsay’s struggles at the plate when he was getting on base, but his walk rate plummeted in May.

Dominic Smith, 1B

2017 Rank: 5

Level: Triple-A (Las Vegas)

May: 29 G, 118 AB, .314/.372/.508, 5 HR, 22 RBI, 10 BB, 21 K, 0/0 SB

Season: 53 G, 213 AB, .324/.377/.498, 7 HR, 37 RBI, 17 BB, 37 K, 0/1 SB

Stock: HOLDING

Dom’s power has started to tick up, but he’s on pace to put up roughly the same kind of numbers he did in 2016, and in the context of the hitter-friendly PCL, I’d like to see better numbers than just strong.

Brandon Nimmo, OF

2017 Rank: 6

Level: Triple-A (Las Vegas)

May: 25 G, 100 AB, .220/.350/.360, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 19 BB, 22 K, 0/0 SB

Season:

5 G, 18 AB, .222/.391/.500, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 5 BB, 4 K, 0/0 SB (High-A)

25 G, 100 AB, .220/.350/.360, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 19 BB, 22 K, 0/0 SB (Triple-A)

Stock: Down

Nimmo is getting on base and demonstrating strong peripherals, but his low batting average is not all due to a low .263 BABIP, and his lack of power is troubling.

Gavin Cecchini, MI

2017 Rank: 7

Level: Triple-A (Las Vegas)

May: 27 G, 114 AB, .263/.317/.342, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 9 BB, 16 K, 0/1 SB

Season: 50 G, 204 AB, .245/.309/.343, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 19 BB, 28 K, 3/4 SB

Stock: DOWN

His defense has looked better, but Cecchini’s bat has taken a step back, though like last month, a BABIP on the low side and strong peripherals suggest he could break out soon.

Justin Dunn, RHP

2017 Rank: 8

Level: High-A (St. Lucie)

May: 2-2, 4.56 ERA, 6 G/3 GS, 23.2 IP, 23 H, 1 HR, 11 BB, 19 K, .256 AVG

Season: 3-3, 5.36 ERA, 10 G/7 GS, 43.2 IP, 49 H, 3 HR, 20 BB, 28 K, .290 AVG

Stock: DOWN

In an effort to manage his innings, Dunn has been piggybacking pitchers doing rehab in St. Lucie, but his performance has warranted giving the right-hander a little extra time to figure things out.

Tomas Nido, C

2017 Rank: 9

Level: Double-A (Binghamton)

May: 21 G, 80 AB, .313/.367/.475, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 8 BB, 10 K, 0/0 SB

Season: 35 G, 136 AB, .265/.311/.412, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 10 BB, 15 K, 0/0 SB

Stock: UP

As the weather has warmed, so too has Nido’s bat, and in addition, the catcher has looked like a leader on the field.

Wuilmer Becerra, OF/DH

2017 Rank: 10

Level: High-A (St. Lucie)

May: 27 G, 102 AB, .245/.297/.343, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 7 BB, 29 K, 3/4 SB

Season: 49 G, 189 G, .265/.322/.370, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 13 BB, 57 K, 4/6 SB

Stock: DOWN

Becerra has gotten back in the outfield, which is a good thing, but his hitting has proven to be subpar.

Ali Sanchez, C

2017 Rank: 11

Level: Low-A (Columbia)

May: 17 G, 56 AB, .304/.361/.339, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 4 BB, 7 K, 0/1 SB

Season: 33 G, 111 AB, .225/.275/.243, 0 HR, 11 RBI, 7 BB, 12 K, 2/3 SB

Stock: UP

Sanchez’s bat looked better in May, but the complete and utter lack of extra-base power is concerning.

Luis Carpio, MI

2017 Rank: 12

Level: Low-A (Columbia)

May: 22 G, 77 AB, .247/.307/.273, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 8 BB, 14 K, 0/0 SB

Season: 46 G, 174 AB, .247/.315/.293, 0 HR, 12 RBI, 18 BB, 35 K, 7/7 SB

Stock: DOWN

Carpio didn’t get off to a good start in April, and his bat looked even more sluggish in May.

Andres Gimenez, SS

2017 Rank: 13

Level: Low-A (Columbia)

May: 22 G, 84 AB, .262/.319/.333, 0 HR, 8 RBI, 4 BB, 15 K, 0/4 SB

Season: 24 G, 91 AB, .275/.347/.374, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 6 BB, 17 K, 0/4 SB

Stock: UP

The youngster cooled off after starting the month hot, but even a solid showing is impressive.

Marcos Molina, RHP

2017 Rank: 15

Level: High-A (St. Lucie)

May: 1-2, 1.80 ERA, 3 G/3 GS, 15.0 IP, 11 H, 0 HR, 2 BB, 8 K, .216 AVG

Season: 1-2, 1.80 ERA, 3 G/3 GS, 15.0 IP, 11 H, 0 HR, 2 BB, 8 K, .216 AVG

Stock: HOLDING

Molina has been solid yet unspectacular since returning from Tommy John surgery.

Peter Alonso, 1B

2017 Rank: 16

Level: High-A (St. Lucie)

May: 5 G, 19 AB, .053/.100/.211, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 4 K, 0/0 SB

Season: 12 G, 44 AB, .136/.174/.273, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 11 K, 0/0 SB

Stock: HOLDING

Alonso has only gotten into a few games since returning from a broken hand, and while he showed the pop he is known for, the rest of his line is not particularly palatable.

Phil Evans, 3B

2017 Rank: 17

Level: Triple-A (Las Vegas)

May: 25 G, 85 AB, .224/.320/.329, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 11 BB, 13 K, 0/0 SB

Season: 47 G, 164 AB, .232/.319/.311, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 19 BB, 25 K, 1/2 SB

Stock: DOWN

Evans had a tough May, just like his April, and nothing suggests he’ll be snapping out of it anytime soon.

Ricky Knapp, RHP

2017 Rank: 18

Level: Triple-A (Las Vegas)

May: 1-3, 4.93 ERA, 6 G/6 GS, 34.2 IP, 47 H, 3 HR, 9 BB, 13 K, .326 AVG

Season: 2-5, 5.16 ERA, 11 G/11 GS, 61.0 IP, 83 H, 5 HR, 15 BB, 29 K, .324 AVG

Stock: Down

Knapp was slightly better in May than in April, but he is just not a pitcher with a profile to succeed in Las Vegas

Merandy Gonzalez, RHP

2017 Rank: 19

Level: Low-A (Columbia)

May: 3-1, 3.41 ERA, 5 G/5 GS, 29.0 IP, 28 H, 3 HR, 7 BB, 33 K, .250 AVG

Season: 7-1, 1.73 ERA, 9 G/9 GS, 57.1 IP, 43 H, 3 HR, 10 BB, 56 K, .209 AVG

Stock: UP

Gonzalez allowed a few earned runs after starting the season with 28-plus scoreless innings, but he is human after all.

Andrew Church, RHP

2017 Rank: 20

Level: High-A (St. Lucie)

May: 3-1, 3.55 ERA, 5 G, 5 GS, 33.0 IP, 33 H, 4 HR, 7 BB, 16 K, .262 AVG

Season: 4-3, 3.60 ERA, 10 G/10 GS, 60.0 IP, 68 H, 6 HR, 11 BB, 30 K, .286 AVG

Stock: HOLDING

Church hasn’t been fooling many, striking out few and allowing a lot of hits, but his defense has bailed him out thus far.

Chris Flexen, RHP

2017 Rank: 21

Level: High-A (St. Lucie)

May: 0-0, 2.13 ERA, 3 G/3 GS, 12.2 IP, 12 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 13 K, .245 AVG

Season: 0-0, 2.13 ERA, 3 G/3 GS, 12.2 IP, 12 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 13 K, .245 AVG

Stock: HOLDING

Flexen made a return to the mound at the end of May after recovering from surgery on his right knee and looked strong in what were in effect a handful of rehab starts down in St. Lucie.

Jeff McNeil, MI/CI

2017 Rank: 22

Level: High-A (St. Lucie)

May: 4 G, 14 AB, .500/.500/1.000, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 0 BB, 3 K, 0/0 SB

Season: 4 G, 14 AB, .500/.500/1.000, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 0 BB, 3 K, 0/0 SB

Stock: HOLDING

Returning to the diamond after roughly a year, McNeil got off to a blistering start, but sustained a groin injury while rounding the bases after hitting his second home run of the season.

Harol Gonzalez, RHP

2017 Rank: 23

Level: Low-A (Columbia)

May: 1-3, 3.09 ERA, 4 G/4 GS, 23.1 IP, 23 H, 1 HR, 7 BB, 17 K, .264 AVG

Season: 2-4, 5.19 ERA, 8 G/8 GS, 43.1 IP, 44 H, 4 HR, 16 BB, 32 K, .268 AVG

Stock: UP

Sporting an improved fastball, Gonzalez had more success in May, especially when it came to limiting the long ball.

Ricardo Cespedes, CF/RF

2017 Rank: 24

Level: Low-A (Columbia)

May: 5 G, 12 AB, .417/.417/.500, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 0 BB, 3 K, 0/0 SB

Season: 5 G, 12 AB, .417/.417/.500, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 0 BB, 3 K, 0/0 SB

Stock: DOWN

After getting activated for the 2017 season, Cespedes only got into a handful of games before getting hurt, but in those couple of looks, the 19-year-old didn’t impress with his player profile.

Cameron Planck, RHP

2017 Rank: 25

Level: N/A

May: N/A

Season: N/A

Stock: HOLDING

Planck has yet to make his 2017 debut.

T.J. Rivera, UTIL

2017 Rank: 26

Level: MLB (New York)

May: 15 G, 68 AB, .294/.347/.441, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 3 BB, 9 K, 0/0 SB

Season:

5 G, 21 AB, .286/.318/.476, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 3 K, 0/0 SB (AAA)

35 G, 93 AB, .269/.330/.398, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 6 BB, 15 K, 1/1 SB (MLB)

Stock: UP

Rivera is performing in the majors better than I could have imagined.
