Final score: Mets 4, Rangers 3—The Wheelers stay on

The Mets took the series finale from the Rangers.

MLB: New York Mets at Texas Rangers Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets beat the Rangers in the finale of their two-game series in Texas by a 4-3 score. Zack Wheeler was excellent, as he gave up just one run in seven innings with five strikeouts and three walks. And he did that despite loading the bases with nobody out in the first inning. He’s been one of the Mets’ best players this year.

And the Mets carried a lead through most of the game thanks to Jay Bruce, who hit a two-run home run in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth. Jerry Blevins coughed up that lead when he gave up a two-run home run to Robinson Chirinos in the bottom of the eighth.

But the Mets re-took the lead in the top of the ninth when Jose Reyes came up with runners on first and second and two outs and hit a ball toward the middle that Rougned Odor fielded and made an awkward throw to shortstop Elvis Andrus at second base—and was dropped, allowing pinch runner Matt Reynolds to score the go-ahead run. And Addison Reed threw a perfect bottom of the ninth.

Full recap to follow.
