Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood walked his first two batters. One batter later, Jay Bruce parked one of Chatwood’s first offerings in the strike zone just to the left of the home run apple in center field for a quick 3-0 lead.
Chatwood would leave with an undisclosed injury, and the Mets would pile on against Chris Rusin, adding one more in the first inning (charged to Chatwood) on a Travis d’Arnaud RBI single and three more in the second inning, taking a commanding 7-0 lead after two innings.
It was all Seth Lugo over the next few innings, as he pitched solid baseball early and chipped in his first career home run in the third inning. Lugo tired over his last couple of innings, but Paul Sewald, Jerry Blevins, and Addison Reed were perfect in relief over the last 2.1 innings to close out the game.
The victory was potentially quite costly for the Mets, as Yoenis Cespedes departed in the sixth inning following an awkward dive after a Nolan Arenado double in which he seemed to jam his right knee.
