Final Score: Rockies 13, Mets 4—Matz gets smashed

The Sunday Mets reared their ugly head again in an ugly loss.

MLB: Colorado Rockies at New York Mets Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

After having two games go “exceedingly well” out of the break, Sunday’s game was anything but, as the Mets got beat up in a 13-4 loss to the Rockies. Steven Matz was terrible for the second start in a row, and the offense couldn’t compensate against Jeff Hoffman and the Rockies’ bullpen. This was the latest installment of the Mets’ struggling on Sundays, as they’ve now gone 5-10 on the first day of the week this season.

Matz allowed four runs in the first and three more in the second without recording an out in the latter. His ERA ballooned to 4.58, still significantly better than his 5.35 FIP. Since returning from elbow discomfort he experienced in spring training and shelving his slider, Matz’s results have been much worse, most evidently in his 5.40 K/9. A cavalcade of relievers followed Matz with mediocre performances, allowing six runs over eight innings. Lucas Duda and Asdrubal Cabrera homered in the loss.

The loss pushes the Mets to 9.5 games back of the second Wild Card and reinforces their firm status as sellers going into the trade deadline. They’ll start a four-game series with the Cardinals on Monday with Zack Wheeler on the mound.

Full recap to follow.
