Final Score: Cardinals 6, Mets 3-Wheels come off

It went downhill quickly in this one.

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Zack Wheeler was pitching pretty well until it all fell apart in the sixth inning in the Mets’ 6-3 loss to the Cardinals. Paul DeJong again went deep against the Mets to give the Cardinals the lead. After Adam Wainwright hit a long double to bring home another run, Wheeler’s night was finished.

Once Wheeler was out of the game it was the bullpen’s turn to escalate the situation. Josh Edgin walked the only batter he faced, and newly-recalled Hansel Robles threw one pitch before his next one was deposited into the stands for a three-run home run by Tommy Pham.

The Mets attempted to get back into the game in the bottom of the sixth. Lucas Duda hit a solo home run, and after two Magneuris Sierra errors, Jose Reyes did a dash around the bases to bring home the Mets’ third run.

The pitching was pretty shaky in this game, but the offense had plenty of chances with runners on and they could not come up with the big hit when they needed it most.

This game goes down as yet another loss to a team ahead of them in the standings as the Trade Deadline gets closer.

Full recap to follow.
