The Mets defeated the Cardinals this afternoon at Citi Field. Seth Lugo started for the Mets and looked great early on, not giving up a hit until the fifth inning. Over six and two thirds innings, Lugo gave up one earned run, struck out five, and walked only one. When Lugo left the game, it was tied 1-1, after Lucas Duda hit a solo home run in the second inning.

Erik Goeddel gave up a solo home run in the eighth, putting the Cardinals up 2-1, before Wilmer Flores hit a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. After Michael Conforto singled, Yoenis Cespedes grounded into a fielder’s choice, erasing Conforto. After a Duda fly out, T.J. Rivera singled Cespedes over to third, Jose Reyes sharply hit a ball behind the first base bag, which Trevor Rosenthal failed to cover, allowing Cespedes to score and the Mets to win the game.
