The Mets continue their hot second half with a walk-off win against the Athletics tonight at Citi Field. The hero of the night was Wilmer Flores, who sent a Simon Castro pitch over the left field fence to secure a 6-5 win as well as a series win for his team.

Zack Wheeler struggled in his five innings, giving up two home runs (to Matt Joyce in the first and Matt Chapman in the third) and walking four over 100 pitches. In the first inning, following Joyce’s home run, Wheeler gave up a walk and a caught steeling to Marcus Semien, who scored on a Khris Davis single. Following a Jed Lowrie walk, Bruce Maxwell doubled in Davis, and Chapman drove in Lowrie with a sacrifice fly. It was 4-0 A’s early.
The Mets wouldn’t get on the board until the sixth, when the offensive barrage against starter Sean Manaea begin. Wilmer Flores led off with a double, and was driven in by a Jay Bruce two-run shot. Jose Reyes tripled, and Travis d’Arnaud singled to bring the game to 5-3. After pinch hitter Curtis Granderson reached on a fielder’s choice, Michael Conforto hit a double which scored Granderson.
In the eighth, d’Arnaud doubled to center field, and pinch hitter Lucas Duda drove him in with a single, tying the game. In the ninth, with two outs and no one on base, Flores hit a laserbeam over the wall in the left, prompting the ever-so-rare Gary Cohen double “outta here” call, and sending the fans home happy.
Josh Smoker, Josh Edgin, and Hansel Robles tossed four shutout innings in relief tonight, striking out one and walking two across their outings. Tomorrow, Rafael Montero will attempt to lead the Mets to their first sweep of the second half against Daniel Gossett.
