Final Score: Mets 5, Padres 3—deGrom was deLightful

Hunter Renfroe made it interesting late.

MLB: New York Mets at San Diego Padres Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets started their West Coast road trip with a flourish, defeating the Padres 5-3 at Petco Park. Jacob deGrom was magnificent, going eight innings, giving up a solo home run to Hunter Renfroe in the seventh, and a run-scoring double by Carlos Asuaje in the eighth. Renfroe would hit a second homer in the ninth inning off of Addison Reed, an absolute bomb to straightaway center field.

Wilmer Flores started the scoring off with a solo home run in the second inning against Clayton Richard. Next inning, Yoenis Cespedes hit a triple, driving in Asdrubal Cabrera, before Jay Bruce knocked in Cespedes one batter later. Bruce would drive in the fourth run of the game in the fifth, plating Michael Conforto.

In the eighth inning, Jose Reyes legged out an infield single before stealing his 500th career base, making him only the 39th player in history to reach that milestone. One batter later, Travis d’Arnaud hit a single to the left side, scoring Reyes.

Reed made Mets fans sweat a bit in the ninth, giving up the home run to Renfroe and eventually putting the tying runs on base with one out. Reed threw a fat pitch over the middle of the plate, resulting in a just foul-bomb by Jabari Blash that nearly lost the game for the Mets. But Reed got out of it, managed to grab the save, and send Mets fans home happy.
