La Potencia was in full force last night, as the Mets defeated the Padres by a score of 6-5. Yoenis Cespedes went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run before being double switched out in the seventh inning as an injury precaution. A ‘little league’ home run in which Cespedes hit a triple then scored on an error from Wil Myers capped off Yo’s night, leaving him just a single shy of the cycle.
Seth Lugo had a quality start, surrendering three runs in the second inning on home runs to Hunter Renfroe and Allen Cordoba. He was otherwise effective, keeping the Padres off the board despite only striking out one batter on the night.
Paul Sewald pitched two fantastic innings before Addison Reed entered to close. Reed deflected a hit from Cory Spanenberg to allow him to reach base. Padres shortstop Dustin Coleman hit a double—his first major league hit—to allow Spanenberg to score to cut the Mets’ lead to one. Reed coaxed a ground out from Jose Pirela to end the game.
Full recap to follow.
