Final Score: Padres 6, Mets 3—Matz gets blasted

Steven Matz’s rough patch continued as the Mets failed to win their third straight against San Diego.

MLB: New York Mets at San Diego Padres Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets failed to win their third straight game in San Diego, falling 6-3 to the Padres. Steven Matz had another horrible outing, and while the bullpen provided six innings of scoreless relief, the Mets’ offense couldn’t mount a comeback. Wilmer Flores launched a home run in the loss.

Matz got shelled again, giving up six runs over three innings of work. He allowed nine hits, six of which went for extra bases, and now has a 14.18 ERA over his last four starts. His stuff is flat and he has little command for anything right now. After closing out last season by taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning, he’s yet to look anything like his pre-injury self in 2017.

The Mets had a chance to get back in the game in the sixth, with one run home already and the bases loaded. Rene Rivera hit a rocket up the middle but was robbed on a diving play by Allen Cordoba. The sparkling defensive play (to go with sliding catches from all three of the Padres’ outfielder) stymied the Mets’ offense, and they didn’t put together a real threat for the rest of the game.

The Mets will play one more in San Diego tomorrow. Chris Flexen is set to make his major league debut.

Full recap to follow.
