The Mariners defeated the Mets in the series finale this afternoon at Safeco Field, 9-1. Seth Lugo went five innings for the Mets, giving up eight hits and five earned runs, while striking out five and not walking a batter. Both Nelson Cruz and Leonys Martin hit home runs, and Robinson Cano, Ben Gamel, and Danny Valencia each drove in runs.

James Paxton struck out eight Mets in his six innings of work, and didn’t walk a batter. The Mets had few highlights today, and that gloom was highlighted by Jose Reyes, who was hit in the forearm by a pitch in the fifth inning, and had to leave the game. The severity of the injury is not known at the time.

The newest Met, AJ Ramos, was greeted rudely by Seattle in his Mets debut, giving up a walk and two singles and throwing a wild pitch, allowing two runs to score in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Curtis Granderson, Travis d’Arnaud, and Matt Reynolds hit three singles in a row, leading to the Mets’ sole run of the afternoon.

Full recap to follow.
