Final Score: Nationals 11, Mets 4—Everything is awful

Seth Lugo and basically everyone else had a rough time on the mound today.

MLB: New York Mets at Washington Nationals Patrick McDermott-USA TODAY Sports

A 2-2 game at the midway point turned into a rout as the Mets dropped a clunker to the Nationals, 11-4.

Jose Reyes led off the game with a home run, and after the Nats put up a two-spot in the third, Rene Rivera added a solo shot in the fourth to tie the game. Then the wheels came off, as Washington scored four runs in the fifth and another three in the sixth to take a 9-2 lead. Two more runs in the bottom of the eighth made it 11-2, and only a Jay Bruce two-run home run in the top of the ninth kept the final score from looking even worse.

Seth Lugo allowed six runs on ten hits, ceding the mound to an even less effective bullpen. Erik Goeddel, Josh Edgin, and Neil Ramirez combined to allow five runs in 2.1 innings of “relief.”

The Mets are now 10.5 games back of the Nationals in the NL East.
