Two familiar foes and one new one helped lead the Cardinals over the Mets 4-1. St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright was nearly untouchable until the seventh when Jay Bruce took him deep to put the Mets on the board.
Yadier Molina had extended the Cardinals’ lead in the sixth with a RBI double off Zack Wheeler. Wheeler’s start was an improvement over his last appearances, but he also got lucky by some bad baserunning. Travis d’Arnaud threw out three runners on the basepaths which helped limit the damage against Wheeler.
Paul DeJong is the newest Met killer and continued to torch them this series. He picked up four extra base hits in this game, scored twice, and drove in two. His first hit was a solo shot in the third, and the doubles in the late innings helped extend St. Louis’s lead.
This was a close game until the Mets’ bullpen got a hold of it and an attempted rally in the ninth ended with a Jose Reyes popup.
