After being sidelined since May following surgery to address a blood clot in his right shoulder, Jeurys Familia will pitch his first rehab game on Tuesday for the Gulf Coast League Mets. As previously reported, Familia began a throwing program in July, with an initial eye towards an August 1 return date.
While Familia could return to the team before the end of the season, in his absence, the closer’s role was filled first by Addison Reed and then by surprise acquisition AJ Ramos. While Ramos has a 6.00 ERA in his brief Mets tenure so far, Reed was superb in his stint as closer, as he had a 2.57 ERA and 19 saves.
While the Mets hope that Familia will return to the form he showed in 2015 and 2016, the start of Familia’s 2017 season was underwhelming. In eleven appearances, Familia had a 3.86 ERA with 9.64 striekouts per nine and a staggering 7.71 walks per nine.
