Final Score: Yankees 5, Mets 4-Don’t go breaking my heart

Jacob deGrom struggled against the Bronx Bombers.

MLB: New York Mets at New York Yankees Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The long ball was again the name of the game in the Mets’ 5-4 loss against their crosstown rivals. Jacob deGrom was not sharp and gave up blasts to Jacoby Ellsbury and Gary Sanchez to put the Yankees ahead. He pitched into the eighth and gave up an additional run on a Sanchez sac fly before his night was done.

Sonny Gray made his Yankee Stadium debut and looked dominant for almost seven innings, but he was unable complete the seventh. After he issued a walk to Wilmer Flores, Dominic Smith took Gray to the opposite field for his first major league home run, which put the Mets on the board and cut the lead in half at the time.

The Yankees’ bullpen played a big factor in the series opener and it played a role in this one as well. Tommy Kahnle and Dellin Betances both kept the Mets off the board in their appearances, and Aroldis Chapman came in for the save.

After Smith was pinch-hit for, Amed Rosario was given a chance to face the flame-thrower and he too went opposite field hit to cut the lead to one, but that was as close as the Mets would get.

Full recap to follow.
