The Yankees beat the Mets in what was a blowout for most of the game but wound up a 7-5 final score. That completes a four-game sweep by the Yankees, and this was by far the least competitive game of the series.
Steven Matz struggled mightily once again, and he gave up seven runs—six of them earned—in just three-and-one-third innings of work. He now has a 6.08 ERA on the season, a mark that’s worse than that of Rafael Montero. If there was a silver lining in this game, it was the Mets’ bullpen, which shut the Yankees out the rest of the way once all of Matz’s runs had scored.
At the plate, the Mets eked out a run on a Matt Reynolds single in the seventh, and they did far more than that in the ninth when Curtis Granderson hit a grand slam to cut the Yankees’ lead to two. But that was it for the Mets’ scoring on the night.
