The Mets made it fun in the ninth, but they ultimately fell to the Diamondbacks 7-4. Tommy Milone started in place of the injured Steven Matz and the results were not good. He gave up a two-out three run home run in the first to J.D. Martinez and the Diamondbacks were off and running. Milone did not make it through the fifth inning, and he left giving up six runs, five of which were earned.
The sixth run scored after Kevin McGowan allowed the inherited runner to come home on Paul Goldschmidt’s double. McGowan made his major league debut and pitched into the seventh inning. After he loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh, Hansel Robles came in and walked in the seventh run, but he was generally effective in three innings of work.
Amed Rosario accounted for the only Met run against Arizona starter Patrick Corbin when he took him deep in the fifth. The offense as a whole had trouble figuring out Corbin, who met very little resistance after he was handed an early lead.
Once Corbin was out of the game, the offense put together a rally in the ninth. They scored three runs against the Arizona bullpen. Both Dominic Smith and Amed Rosario picked up extra base hits to drive to cut into the lead, but Gavin Cecchini grounded out to end the attempted comeback.
Full recap to follow.
