A lovely afternoon for a getaway game in Flushing Thursday eventually turned sour in a 3-2 Mets loss to the Diamondbacks. The Mets were coming off a nice win in which all of their young players contributed positively. The Diamondbacks were welcoming back Robbie Ray in his first start since getting struck in the head by a line drive on July 28.
Rafael Montero and Ray matched zeroes over the first few innings. The Mets took a short-lived lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Yoenis Cespedes solo shot into the second deck in left field. Arizona answered right back to take the lead with two in the top of the fifth thanks in large part to some soft singles—including a mental error by Wilmer Flores turning a Ray sacrifice attempt into a hit.
Things got even darker for a franchise seemingly living under a perpetual cloud in the bottom of the fifth when, with two on and two out, Michael Conforto dislocated his shoulder swinging at a Ray fastball. Brandon Nimmo finished the at-bat and struck out.
The Mets had another chance in the bottom of the seventh, but Nimmo—in Conforto’s spot—grounded out with the bases loaded, scoring the Mets’ second run. The Mets—and their stunned fans—largely went quietly the rest of the way.
Full recap to follow.
