Final Score: Nationals 9, Mets 4—Too much Gsellman and Familia, not enough Flores

Presumably Robert Gsellman still needs to start pitching better.

Robert Gsellman allowed four runs in the first inning and the Mets couldn’t claw their way back in a 9-4 loss to the Nationals in Washington. Gsellman allowed nine hits and two walks and struck out just one batter in four rough innings of work.

The Mets were in a 5-0 hole before Juan Lagares lined home Jose Reyes in the top of the third to get the Mets on the board. The score was 6-1 when Wilmer Flores hit a solo home run to make it a 6-2 game. In the top of the eighth, Flores drove home another pair of runs on a double to right. The Nationals challenged the fair-foul call, but the ruling on the field—that it was a fair ball—was upheld.

Jeurys Familia made his first big league appearance since May 10 and was not sharp, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in an inning of work.

The Mets and Nationals will play two games on Sunday. Tommy Milone and Tanner Roark will square off in the first game at 1:35 PM. Seth Lugo is scheduled to start against Erick Fedde in the second game of the day-night doubleheader, an 8:08 PM affair on ESPN.

Full recap to follow.
