Final score: Nationals 5, Mets 4—Banana split

The Mets split the doubleheader and the series.

In the second game of their day-night Sunday doubleheader, the Mets lost to the Nationals by a 5-4 score. They fell behind when the Nationals scored two in the bottom of the fourth, but they turned that 2-0 deficit into a lead on an RBI double by Juan Lagares in the sixth and a two-run home run from Brandon Nimmo.

But the Mets’ bullpen gave up two runs in the sixth and one more in the eighth, which made the lone run the Mets scored in the top of the ninth one run shy of a game-tying comeback. And the good news is that this loss doesn’t harm the Mets at all and doesn’t really help the Nationals much, either.

Full recap to follow.
