With a spectacular outing from Rafael Montero the night before, staff ace Jacob deGrom looked to follow suit and put on a show of his own in Cincinatti. Unfortunately, deGrom would not have such luck. He struck out five, but allowed four runs—three earned—in six innings. He walked three and allowed six hits.
On offense, the Mets had some early success against Robert Stephenson, pushing across a run in the first on an Asdrubal Cabrera sacrifice fly, and another in the third inning on a Brandon Nimmo RBI single. But Stephenson would find his groove from there, and the Mets’ offense was shut down for the rest of the afternoon. They would manage only three more hits after the third inning for the rest of the game, and would not score again.
The Mets’ bullpen came on in the seventh inning and allowed three more runs over the last three innings, putting the game completely out of reach.
Full recap to follow.
