Final Score: Reds 10, Mets 5—Bloody Sundays

Mets fail to record first home sweep of season as Reds batter bullpen.

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at New York Mets Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

Jacob deGrom looked like he might not be long for his Sunday afternoon start, allowing four of the first five runners to reach as the Reds took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

As is often his wont, deGrom settled down, allowing only one walk and an infield single over his final five frames while striking out 10. Meanwhile, the Mets chipped away, getting one back in the bottom of the first and tying the game in the third on a Dominic Smith RBI single.

When Smith homered on a high fastball leading off the bottom of the sixth, and the Mets cashed in two more on a Jose Reyes double for a three-run lead, deGrom was in line for his 15th victory of the season, and it looked as if the team was on its way to a rare Sunday victory, and elusive home sweep.

However, the Mets’ bullpen had other plans, surrendering eight runs over the final three innings, as the Mets went down to an all-too-familiar 2017 result—a painful Sunday defeat.

Full recap to follow.
