The Cubs defeated the Mets tonight in the first game of their three-game set at Wrigley Field, 8-3. Robert Gsellman started for the Mets and struggled with his control, but kept the Cubs off the board until the fourth inning, when Gsellman could no longer walk the tighrope, giving up four runs, including a three-run home run by Kris Bryant.
Juan Lagares led off the fourth inning with a double, and he eventually scored after advancing on a pair of ground balls. The Mets added their second run in the fifth on a Travis d’Arnaud sacrifice fly. The third and final run came in the ninth on a bases loaded ground out by Norichika Aoki.
Jose Quintana didn’t give up much else, striking out seven, and looking quite sharp over his seven innings. Kyle Schwarber, Ben Zobrist, Ian Happ, and Bryant extended the Cub lead with a home run, a single, a home run, and a sacrifice fly, respectively.
Each of the Mets’ four relievers gave up a run tonight.
Full recap to follow.
