Final score: Cubs 14, Mets 6—Polar opposite of that NLCS

The Mets were obliterated by the Cubs again.

MLB: New York Mets at Chicago Cubs Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

For the third time in as many nights in Chicago, the Mets were beaten by the Cubs, this time by a 14-6 score in the second consecutive game that resembled a football score more than a baseball one. Seth Lugo started the game and wound up having the worst start of his major league career, as he gave up eight runs—seven earned—on nine hits in three-plus innings. That alone was enough to do the Mets in, even though they had jumped out to a 3-0 lead beforehand.

Three Mets relievers combined to allow five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, not that they really at that point since the runs Lugo had allowed were enough to beat them anyway. And to make matters worse, Travis d’Arnaud and Amed Rosario left the game early with injuries. If you’re looking for bright spots, well, Chris Flexen threw a scoreless inning, and Dominic Smith and d’Arnaud each hit a home run in the game.
