The 2017 Hurricane Maria Amazin’ Avenue Charity Pledge Drive

Let’s pitch in for Puerto Rico, which needs all of the help it can get.

It’s been a little while since our last edition of the annual Amazin’ Avenue Charity Pledge Drive, but now is as good a time as any to reboot the concept. We’re setting our focus right now on the hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico, an island that, among many other great things, has a rich baseball history and produced one of the greatest Mets of all time: Carlos Beltran. The situation on the island is bleak, and we’re encouraging our community here to chip in to any one of several charities that will be working to get the island of American citizens back on its feet.

The list suggested by Amazin’ Avenue alum Matthew Callan is a good one:

If you’re into some vintage VHS footage of various New York City things, some of which includes the Mets, Matthew is offering to send some stuff from his collection to anyone that to anyone who chips in ten bucks or more and sends him a screenshot showing as much.

The way this drive typically worked was this: Pick some arbitrary stats for the upcoming Mets season and assign a pledge value to them. For example, back then, you might have pledged $1 per David Wright strikeout over the course of the season, turning a negative into a positive.

Since the 2017 season is practically over, let’s just make some straightforward pledges here. The condition doesn’t have to be a negative, either. Jacob deGrom strikeouts, Michael Conforto home runs, and Mets wins (or losses) are all pretty easy to turn into donations that fit what you’re able to do. We’ll tally everything up and post an update in this post or its comments once things have rolled in, and we thank you for considering helping out the cause.
